Abraham, Isaac, & Mt. Moriah
Before we begin this story, I want to do something that most do not. Just about every author of biblical summaries and conclusions wait until the end to present their conclusions. By the time you get there, you are disgusted to think that Abraham had it in him to sacrifice his son. This is not true. Abraham loved his son. He wanted a son with his wife Sarah more than anything in the world and, and now he is being asked to sacrifice his only son ( wait!!… what?? ) whom he cherished more than anything ( sound familiar?? ) to God.
Isaac, who was 33 years old at the time ( age sound familiar?? ), willingly accepted to be sacrificed to God. Who else at the age of 33 was sacrificed on a cross??
God is identifying with Abraham and showing him his heart. That he is willing to trade his son to save the world.
Everyone has heard the story of Abraham being told to sacrifice his favorite son ( his only son by his wife Sarah ) up on Mt. Moriah.
It is said that God wanted to test Abraham’s faith. It took 3 days to get to the location where the sacrifice would be performed. ( 3 days? Hmm? So many parallels. )
Abraham carried his knife and the coals, while Isaac himself carried the wood. Isaac even asked his father, “We have the coal and wood, but there is no lamb for the sacrifice.” Abraham replied, “the Lord would provide.” As did God provide the sacrifice to save humanity with the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
